We are doing it! It’s time to refresh our personal Layer flock and we are making the switch to American Bresse. Why Bresse? I think they can be the perfect breed for a small farm or Homestead. It’s really the meat production that makes them. Traditionally French Bresse are raised on dairy. This takes advantage of their genetic tendency to add more fat that other birds, even referred to as marbling. We will be doing our first trial run using Calf milk replacer as the dairy component this year.

Going to a single breed flock (almost, all the other hens will lay a different color egg so we can differentiate) allows us to hatch true to breed chicks. Now we wont have to deal with the rising prices of day old Poultry and whatever the newest vaccine/bird flu is doing to the industry. Of course when you hatch, you have 50/50 male to female odds. So what to do with the unneeded males? In this case we can grow out a super premium and rare treat. Of course, they are solid layers as well.
Road Ends Farm will be offering Hatching eggs, Day old Chicks, Pullets, and all ages of Laying hens as we go forward. We will also have Roosters available, well, before graduation day anyways.
